Alamo Bowl quick hits: Beavers coach Mike Riley on the end of the first half (video)

Oregon State had the ball and was driving in the final the final seconds of the first half ticked when Brandin Cooks caught a pass that the Beavers thought went for a first down. The officials spotted it differently and the offense wasn't able to spike the ball to set up another play as time expired.

Coach Mike Riley explained in the press conference after the game that he thought there should have been a review.

?the looming legal row, which is due to commence on 9 January ...

The judicial review hearing is scheduled to begin on 9 January 2013.

The majority of local politicians and businessmen seem to be behind the plan. Ian Paisley Jr, a Democratic Unionist MP, described the trust?s opposition as a ?disgrace to Northern Ireland?. Golfers are also supportive. Clarke has attacked the trust for trying to block a project that he said would create 360 jobs for the local economy.

Paisley claims that the row has already prompted one potential financial backer to look elsewhere.

The trust, which has four million members around the world, is acutely aware that its decision to take legal action is controversial and almost unprecedented. But Heather Thompson, National Trust director for Northern Ireland, claims the trust had no choice: to walk away from the fight would have been a betrayal of its core beliefs and detrimental to the long-term success of Northern Ireland.

?This issue is wider than about Ireland and even the UK,? she said. ?It?s about how we use the resources we have today to ensure future generations have similar opportunities.?

In a letter to the trust?s 60,000 members in Northern Ireland, she explained: ?We passionately believe that such a development in this protected landscape is wrong ? once it?s gone, it?s gone. If this development is allowed to proceed in this special place, then the message is being dispatched that nowhere in Northern Ireland, no matter how special or protected, is safe from development.?

Unsurprisingly [Alistair Hanna, the New York-based developer behind the scheme], an evangelical Christian, has been critical of the trust?s actions. ?Those who instigate judicial reviews cost taxpayers money and slow down development, despite knowing the process can?t improve the decision,? he said on Twitter.

Instagram: No, We Didn't Just Lose 25% Of Our Users - Business ...

Instagram has responded to yesterday's odd report that it lost 25% of its active users.

"This data is inaccurate," an Instagram spokesperson told Sam Biddle at Gizmodo. "We continue to see strong and steady growth in both registered and active users of Instagram."

A minor kerfuffle kicked up when AppData showed Instagram's daily active users dropping sharply on Christmas day. AppData tracks usage through Facebook log-ins, so it's absolute numbers are useless, but its trends should be informative.

For some reason AppData told the New York Post that it thought the reason for the steep usage decline was Instagram's change in terms of service. On December 17, Instagram updated its terms of service with scary language that suggested it was going to take users' photos and sell them as advertising. Four days later, Instagram walked back that language.

It didn't make any sense to blame the terms of service controversy since it was a full week after it started that AppData showed a drop. It also didn't make sense to see a decline on Christmas since lots of people were taking pictures of their family, their new toys, photos of photos of themselves as little kids, and posting them to Instagram.

If anything, there seems to be something wrong with AppData's data. Robin Wauters at The Next Web notes that AppData data shows the same sort of steep drop for Pinterest, Spotify, Farmville 2, and many other apps, on Christmas day.

Nissan upgrades US Leaf warranties, will 'restore' batteries that lose too much charge

Nissan Leaf to go farther and cost less in 2013

Nissan has thrown down the warranty gauntlet to other EV makers by announcing it would be the first to "restore" battery capacity if a Leaf's full charge fell below 9 out of 12 "bars" within 5 years or 60k miles. The new clause was announced by VP Andy Palmer and will go into effect in spring of next year on all models, including those sold in 2011 and 2012. The company stressed it would only "repair or replace the battery under warranty with a new or remanufactured unit to restore capacity at or above a minimum of nine bars," and not a full charge -- saying a gradual, but not excessive loss of charge was normal. Nissan added that it'd look to improve the accuracy of the battery gauge, since the aforementioned bars on the dash were computer managed and not exactly scientific. All of this applies to US-only vehicles for now, but similar policies will soon go into effect worldwide, according to the statement. So, if you've been starting to get range anxiety, check the PR below the break for more info.

How to Lubricate Your Garage Door and Opener Properly ? Home ...

During the winter months or arid season, your garage door becomes more susceptible to environmental damage. While making the door shiny with a nice anti-rust coating or replacing the rubber track on the bottom may seem important, but it?s not compared to the garage door when it needs proper lubrication.

?

Keeping your door lubricated will ensure that it doesn?t ever lock up or break, and fall off of its tracks. Here are some simple steps to keep your door lubricated this winter.

?

Step 1 ? Choose your Grease not Oil!

?

The number one mistake that most do it yourself fanatics make is to use oil instead of grease, or WD40 instead of grease made products. Using WD40 on the door is of course acceptable but you will be paying to repair your door a lot quicker. WD40 is made of oil and is a degreaser, so you can see why spraying a degreaser unto a door track that needs greasing to work can be problematic.

The best type of grease you can use is a Lithium based grease but if you can?t find a Lithium spray then you can use a Silicon spray. Both can be used and are a lot better than using oil. Being sprayed on the door, the oil will drip and not stay put, which can ruin your door track.

?

Step 2 ? Spraying rollers

?

You want to lubricate all moving parts on the door. Depending on your height and eyesight level, you may want to grab a step stool or ladder to reach those hard to get to places.

?

Close the door and disconnect it from the motor. You are going to want to spray all the movable parts by moving the door up and down the bendable track part of the door as it leaves most of the metal exposed for greasing.

?

A. Plastic and Metal rollers are the most common types of rollers for doors. A plastic roller can be greased but it won?t help much as these are designed to only last a couple of years. As far as the metal roller, the ball bearings are inside of the center and you will need the small spray tube to make sure the grease reaches them.

B. Precision doors use a closed in ball bearing so there is no maintenance.

?

Step 3 ? Spraying Pulley?s

?

The older that your pulley gets the more wiggle room it will have and at this point in time, grease would be pointless and they would need to be replaced anyway. You want to keep pulleys greased from the start to prevent oxidation.

?

Step 4 ? Greasing the opener

?

Do not grease up the chain, this is a mistake most make. You want to lubricate the top of the rail but you don?t need to grease the door tracks, just clean them. You want to make sure that your door?s spring system stays clean. Only a torsion spring needs grease which is done simply by spraying the spring and running the door up and down a few times.

31 Days to a Healthier You: A Delaware Social Media Campaign ...

NEW CASTLE (Dec. 28, 2012) ? Small steps toward good health can lead to big rewards. Building healthy habits often starts with small ideas about the changes you want to accomplish, a commitment to make those changes and, sometimes, a social connection to keep you going. To help promote a healthier Delaware, the Department of Health and Social Services, in connection with the Governor?s Office and the YMCA of Delaware, will kick off a social media campaign on Jan. 1 called ?31 Days to a Healthier You.?

Gov. Jack Markell, DHSS Secretary Rita Landgraf, Delaware Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay and YMCA President/CEO Michael Graves will mark the campaign with a press event at 10 a.m. Jan. 2 at the Downtown Central YMCA in Wilmington.

Each day using Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, flickr, Instagram or YouTube, ?31 Days to a Healthier You? will offer fitness/activity ideas, nutritional information and healthy recipes, advice on how to quit smoking, tips on health screenings and more. The campaign will share links to information, photos, how-to videos and contact information, all using the hashtag #healthDE. The goal is to provide quick and easy-to-implement small steps that are both practical and will make a real difference in people?s lives.

?What a great way to start the New Year,? Gov. Markell said. ?Every year around Jan. 1, we collectively think about healthier habits we can embrace. This campaign offers Delawareans the opportunity to start 2013 with good advice for making small lifestyle changes that will lead to lasting differences in their lives. Plus, it encourages all of us to support one another. We hope you share this campaign with your family, your co-workers or your fellow students.?

Across the state, Delaware is starting to see improvement in some key health indicators. The prevalence of cigarette smoking among Delaware?s adults is among the lowest levels since the Division of Public Health began collecting data in 1982. And in the past 10 years, the rate of cardiovascular deaths dropped from 331.4 to 258.1 deaths per 100,000 population. Many challenges remain. While the obesity rates for children and adults appear to be leveling off, too many people remain at an unhealthy weight. Other indicators continue to rise. The state?s diabetes rate and the number of people who say they lead sedentary lives are still increasing. Small steps can make a big difference. For example, people at increased risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the disease?s onset by losing 5 percent to 7 percent of their body weight through increased physical activity and a reduced-fat and lower-calorie diet.

?Making small lifestyle changes can bring big rewards when it comes to your health,? Secretary Landgraf said. ?Whatever the change you are embracing ? making healthier food choices, being more physically active, quitting smoking or getting regular medical screenings ? this campaign will give you ideas and connections. Because the campaign involves social media, we need the public?s interaction, too. As part of that connectedness, we?ll ask you to share photos that illustrate your small health changes or offer inspiration to others.?

On Facebook and Instagram, Delawareans will be encouraged to share their photos that answer this question: What does ?Healthy? look like??

?Public Health is urging people to remember ?5-2-1 Almost None,? which means eating at least five servings of fruit or vegetables a day, watching no more than two hours of recreational screen time daily, being physically active for at least one hour a day and drinking almost no sugar-sweetened drinks,? said Dr. Rattay, director of DHSS? Division of Public Health. ?For example, drinking one less 12-ounce can of regular soda a day could save 15 pounds in a year. Pick the 5-2-1-Almost None goal you want to aim for and make a plan to take small steps to reach it.?

For the YMCA of Delaware, helping individuals build healthy lifestyle habits is a big part of its mission.

?The core of the YMCA of Delaware is healthy living, youth development and social responsibility, said Michael P. Graves, President of the YMCA of Delaware. ?We know from experience that?the beginning of the New Year is a time when people feel most optimistic and hopeful about changing behaviors and taking steps?towards healthier living. The Y has programs and classes in place to help people reach their goals. We work at it 365 days a year so we are thrilled to be part of Delaware?s 31 Days to a Healthier You?social media campaign.?

Study ties drug shortage to poorer cancer survival - Salt Lake Tribune

Young cancer patients who couldn?t get a key medicine because of a national drug shortage were more likely to suffer a relapse than others who were able to get the preferred treatment, doctors report. It?s the first evidence that a long-standing drug-supply problem probably has affected cancer treatment results in specific patients.

The study involved more than 200 children and young adults with a blood cancer called Hodgkin lymphoma. Like childhood leukemia, it can be cured nearly 80 percent of the time. But a drug shortage that has worsened since 2009 is threatening that success rate, doctors report in Thursday?s New England Journal of Medicine.

Hundreds of drugs, including sedatives, antibiotics, painkillers and cancer treatments, have gone in and out of short supply in recent years. Reasons include manufacturing and contamination problems, plant shutdowns, and fewer makers and lower profits for certain drugs, especially generics infused during surgery or cancer treatment.

Doctors sometimes substitute different drugs for ones in short supply. But proving that the swaps led to poorer results has been tough, especially for cancer patients whose disease and response to treatment vary so much.

"We really couldn?t put our finger on, did anybody really suffer?" said Dr. Michael Link, a cancer specialist at Stanford University and past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The new study, led by Dr. Monika Metzger of St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital in Memphis, gives the best evidence so far that patients are suffering.

It focused on mechlorethamine, or nitrogen mustard, a drug that has been in short supply until last month, when more became available. Doctors compared results among 181 Hodgkin lymphoma patients who received the drug to 40 others who were given a different chemotherapy, cyclophosphamide, when the first choice was unavailable.

Only 75 percent of those given the substitute drug stayed free of cancer for two years versus 88 percent who received the preferred treatment.

"We can think of no credible explanation for this dramatic difference" other than the drug substitution, the authors wrote.

No patients died, but those who relapsed were given more aggressive treatments, including stem-cell transplants that have more side effects and can harm fertility.

story continues below

One of them was Abby Alonzo, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was diagnosed with lymphoma three years ago, when she was 10. After eight weeks of treatment with the preferred drug, "she was doing wonderfully," said her mother, Katie Alonzo.

Then doctors said they were out of it.

"I said, what do you mean, we don?t have the medication my child needs?" Katie Alonzo said.

After four weeks on the substitute chemo, Abby?s cancer had returned and spread to more places, her mother said. The child received high doses of chemotherapy and radiation and now seems cancer-free, although the treatments damaged her lung capacity, leaving her short of breath.

"When your child has cancer you live day by day," and to find out a life-saving medicine isn?t available is "very, very frightening," Katie Alonzo said.

What Debris From North Korea's Rocket Launch Shows

To be honest, if the resources of the US were treated in the same way that NK treats it's own people, we'd probably be setting up a colony on Mars right now.

Most of the reason we are not on Mars right now is that people compare the costs of doing that with maintaining standard of living. In NK, there is no health care debate. Everyone there gets free health care, to a maximum of a band aid and a Kim Jong Un lollipop when they have cancer. In essence, you'd almost be better off living on the streets in the US than to be an NK peasant most days.

However, yes, their prestige project of rocket science is moving along, and it will eventually progress. That's what happens when a country focuses itself, even imperfectly, on a narrow set of goals, and treats everything else at a bare minimum level. That focus is part arrogance of their elite class, and partly a need for Kim Jong Un to shore up his power base by keeping his military happy with him.

You could do the same thing in the US too. I assure you, if you did only the minimum you needed to hold down your job, and instead lived in cheap rat infested tenements and ate ramen noodles for your one daily meal, despite the fact that you make more than enough to live in a nice home, you could have a decent nest egg built up. People in the US used to go live in houses they build out of sod so that they could get their hands on some land and make something of themselves. That doesn't mean that I am suggesting that we all sell our houses and go live in shacks to afford good health care, for instance, but a lot of people don't realize that we do actually have a lot of resources at our disposal even if they are limited. It is what we do with those limited resources which makes the difference.

North Korea has chosen its space program over its people, and the space program is progressing because of it.

Why You Need Social Media for Sales, Marketing, Customer Service ...

This is a guest post by Will Vicary. If you would like to submit a guest article, please check out our guest post guidelines.

The internet and social media have together created huge challenges for businesses over the past decade ? and it?s not just marketing departments that have been affected: companies have had to adapt every area in their organisation, including sales, customer service and recruitment.

Customers no longer rely on traditional advertising such as billboards or TV adverts to learn about new products.

Social media has changed the rules and empowered customers by giving them new tools to find, share, collaborate and buy with.

Sales

Social media has had a profound impact on the process sales. From a customer perspective, the rapid expansion (and near-universal popularity) of social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube has dramatically shifted the power balance towards those looking to buy a product or service.

Today?s customers are more connected, more social and more aware than ever. Obvious traditional sales techniques are becoming less effective as consumers become savvier and more informed as a result of social networking with friends and peers. As a result, sales representatives need more than just good pitching skills; they need to be to understand their customers inside and out and offer solutions, not promotions, to attract business.

The biggest impact social media has had on the sales process is that marketing no longer has complete control over what is said about a brand. Connected customers are going beyond the company website to read blogs, follow Twitter handles, and join in LinkedIn conversations to gain outside perspectives to inform purchasing decisions.

Sales-related information is now so prevalent that a recent Forrester report estimates between 50-70% of the buying process happens before a sales rep even gets involved.

Although social media has altered the way salespeople must approach their jobs, it has also provided them with the ability to learn more about their customers and prospects than ever before. Today?s sales reps can use social media platforms alongside customer relationship management (CRM) tools to enhance their customer interactions, and truly understand and effectively service customer needs.

Marketing & customer service

The walls between customer service and marketing are breaking down as the popularity of social channels rises. Marketers are now finding new and innovative ways of engaging with consumers to build up a brand?s image, gain positive word of mouth and enhance their online PR.

Organisations? relationships with their customers is no longer a one-way street, with brands shouting at consumers through an advertising megaphone.

It?s a new cooperative environment involving two-way conversations and dialogue rather than monologue.

In this atmosphere, the line blurs between what constitutes marketing and what constitutes customer service. Marketing becomes a process of delivering solutions to current and potential customer?s pain points, while customer service success returns positive sentiment across social media channels, and the subsequent proliferation of word-of-mouth marketing.

When it comes to social customer service, the key is to know your audience, understand that there are fast response expectations on social media channels, and to keep in mind the inherent public nature of these platforms, which can directly impact your brand.

Customers who have received good customer service through social media channels are bound to be more likely to buy from that brand again, all of which points to the simple fact that brands who ignore social media do so at their peril.

HR and recruitment

When it comes to recruitment, some businesses are using social media very effectively, particularly when it comes to the research and identification of potential candidates, which can be performed relatively cheaply and quickly.

The most popular professional social network, LinkedIn, has a massive 175 million members. Employers are taking note of the importance of social media in the recruiting process, and the majority of businesses are turning to social media to find and evaluate job candidates.

According to Career Enlightenment, on average 20% of employers now use social networking sites to research job candidates ? and of that percentage, a third said they?ve rejected candidates based on something they found about them online.

The explosion of social media has been felt throughout the business world, with many companies now recognising the benefits that this phenomenon can reap for them. To this end, organisations need to evolve or be left behind by more forward thinking and adaptable socially-optimised competitors

Survey finds increase in e-reading, drop in paper

NEW YORK (AP) ? The tastes of the reading public are turning digital.

A Pew Internet Research Center survey released Thursday found that the percentage of Americans aged 16 and older who read an e-book grew from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year. Readers of traditional books dropped from 72 percent to 67 percent. Overall, those reading books of any kind dropped from 78 percent to 75 percent, a shift Pew called statistically insignificant.

Those owning an e-book device or tablet jumped from 18 percent to 33 percent, with much of that increase coming from last year's holiday season, when millions received Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers as gifts.

Awareness that libraries offer digital texts grew from 24 percent to 31 percent.

The telephone survey of 2,252 people aged 16 and older was conducted from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

Nigeria: Warehouse said to hold fireworks explodes

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A massive explosion ripped through a warehouse full of fireworks in Nigeria's largest city on Wednesday, sparking a fire that threatened surrounding city blocks and sending a plume of thick smoke high into the sky.

The blast happened around 9 a.m. in the Jankara area of Lagos Island, a neighborhood of narrow streets and tall cement buildings holding shops and housing people sometimes a dozen to a room in the megacity of Lagos. The force of the explosion echoed miles away and shook windows.

It was immediately unclear if anyone was inside of the building at the time of the explosion. An Associated Press journalist saw members of the Nigerian Red Cross treating people with minor cuts and bruises a few blocks from the site. Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Lagos state's emergency manager, told the AP he wasn't immediately aware of any casualties.

"While security agencies (will) investigate and determine the real cause of the explosion and fire outbreaks, casualty figures are yet to be determined," said Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. "Some residents who were injured while attempting to assist in putting off the fire have been taken to hospital for treatment."

Rubble-strewn streets surrounding the burning building were covered in the spent shells of fireworks. Several police officers and security officials found large, mortar-like fireworks in the building, the kind wired to explode as part of a large arrangement put on by professionals.

Nigerians commonly shoot off fireworks and firecrackers to mark Christmas and the New Year, with hawkers roaming in traffic with fistfuls of the small explosives to sell to passing drivers. Local government officials have tried to ban fireworks this year, in part due to safety and in part due to the fear they can cause in a nation where a radical Islamist sect is carrying out shootings and car bombings. Nevertheless fireworks have exploded across the country in recent days to mark the holiday season.

Immediately after the blast Wednesday, thousands quickly filled the streets surrounding the still-burning buildings. Others ran away as fireworks continued to explode inside. A half-dozen firefighters arrived at the scene with two trucks and locals also ran fire hoses from the trucks to nearby buildings to try and beat back the flames.

The trucks quickly ran out of water. One man even scooped up water from a puddle with a bowl in an attempt to fight the blaze. One firefighter briefly fought with a young man who took his firefighting helmet off his head and ran away into the swarming crowd. The firefighter shrugged and went back to his truck as the building continued to burn.

In passport kerfuffle, Taiwan is stickin' it to China

Taiwan is fighting back with stickers after China issued passports showing ownership over the entire South China Sea.

By Ralph Jennings,?Correspondent / December 18, 2012

A page from a Chinese passport displays a Chinese map which includes an area in the South China Sea inside a line of dashes representing maritime territory claimed by China, in Kunming, Yunnan province, in this November file photo.

China hasn?t started a military war with Taiwan ? as has been feared since the 1940s ? but a battle that began on paper last month has met with a fiery pulp-and-ink response that could burn a hole in goodwill between the two once-hostile governments.

Pictures on Beijing?s latest passports show a map of China that includes two parts of Taiwan, including its scenic showpiece Sun Moon Lake. The travel documents also depict islets in the South China Sea as China's, despite competing claims by Taiwan and several Southeast Asian countries.

China, already a regional heavyweight, is believed to have issued 5 million of the passports between April and November when they inflamed a regional dispute with neighbors. Now Taiwan is joining the chorus of protest, not by refusing to stamp them as Vietnam has announced it is doing, and not by issuing their own maps as India has done, but with some provocative stickers with a message to China. ?

China has claimed Taiwan as part of its turf since the 1940s, when Chiang Kai-shek?s Nationalists set up a government to rival mainland China's about 100 miles offshore after losing the Chinese civil war to Mao Zedong?s Communists. The relationship between China and Taiwan has been up and down for the past few decades: Both?formal reunification with the mainland and full Taiwanese independence have been suggested,?but a tempering of relations has kept many content with the middle ground status quo, with Taiwan considering itself an effectively independent territory.?

Still, the maps in China?s passports were taken as a bold affront to that. In response, Taiwan?s main opposition Democratic Progressive Party gave away 10,000 pink stickers at the foreign ministry consular office in Taipei. The stickers that read ?Taiwan is my Country? can be slapped onto the back cover of a Taiwan passport or onto a plastic passport protector.?

The stickers went fast two weeks ago, so the party copied off another 20,000. ?People just love them,? says its policy coordination executive director Joseph Wu. ?It?s quite clear that what China is doing trespasses into our sovereignty. Taiwan is not under any country?s jurisdiction.?

Across town, the smaller Taiwan Solidarity Union Party printed out oversized paper effigies of the Chinese passports and marred or burned them at a rally, according to local media.

Taiwan and China have set aside differences over sovereignty since 2008, when the island?s conciliatory President Ma Ying-jeou took office. Mr. Ma?s government has signed 18 deals with China, drawing Taiwan closer to the world economic powerhouse. Talks on those agreements built mutual trust that didn?t exist before.

The island?s foreign ministry says?that trust is now being questioned. The ministry?s news release calls China?s passport issue ?a provocative act that will ? damage the mutual trust laboriously built by the two sides in recent years.?

Taiwanese opposition forces are protesting the Chinese passports because they worry that the government is courting China rather than standing up to it, but analysts say officials in Taipei are just as irked as their skeptics.

?Our government thinks that China betrayed common ground, which is that there?s one China but subject to different interpretations,? says Nathan Liu, an associate international affairs professor at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, citing the basis for talks and deals since 2008.

Whither the birthplace of Jesus?

Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem @ UNESCOChurch of the Nativity, Bethlehem @ UNESCO

For centuries, Christians have been making the pilgrimage to Bethlehem to pay their respects to Jesus ? except they may have been making a wrong turn.

According to NPR and the London Times, the son of Mary wasn't born in the little town of Bethlehem in Palestine's West Bank area. Instead, archaeologists think it's the little village called Bethlehem of the Galilee, about 100 miles north.

As if shifting a well-traveled holy route wouldn't be awkward enough, the United Nations just designated Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November ? the first for Palestine. This year, AFP reported that an estimated 15,000 are visiting Bethlehem. People even pay homage online: Searches on Yahoo! have rise for "bethlehem" (+109%), "o little town of bethelem lyrics" (+50%), and "bethlehem israel" (off the charts) in the past day.

The hypothesis isn't a new one among scholars, and the Israeli Antiques Authority (IAA) has been talking about evidence unearthed in an excavation that may point to where the real manger lies. "It makes much more sense that Mary rode on a donkey, while she was at the end of the pregnancy, from Nazareth to Bethlehem of Galilee which is only 7 kilometers rather then the other Bethlehem which is 150 kilometers," IAA senior archaeologist Aviram Oshri explained to NPR, adding that West Bank's Bethlehem (also called Judea) didn't even have residents back in the first century.

Religious scholars have noted how the Bible refers to Jesus as "Jesus of Nazareth." In 2008, the National Geographic points to a passage (John: 7:41-43) noting how his origins from Galilee counted against him.

Oshri wrote about how the evidence changed his mind for Archaeology magazine in 2005:

I had never before questioned the assumption that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea. But in the early 1990s, as an archaeologist working for the IAA, I was contracted to perform some salvage excavations around building and infrastructure projects in a small rural community in the Galilee. When I started work, some of the people who lived around the site told me how Jesus was really born there, not in the south. Intrigued, I researched the archaeological evidence for Bethlehem in Judea at the time of Jesus and found nothing. This was very surprising, as Herodian remains should be the first thing one should find. What was even more surprising is what archaeologists had already uncovered and what I was to discover over the next 11 years of excavation at the small rural site--Bethlehem of Galilee.

The IAA stopped the excavations in 2006, citing a lack of funding; right now nobody's investing in any more digs at the Bethlehem of the Galilee. Oshri doesn't think any new evidence would change anything anyhow. "I don?t think it will make a difference to people,? Oshri told the London Times. ?Christianity is leaning on the Old Testament, and in the Old Testament the Messiah should come from the house of David and Bethlehem near Jerusalem."

Having A Great Commercial Real Estate Agent Is ... - Maynas Eric

Commercial property is similar to a double-edged sword. It can make you big profits, but it may also be financially devastating. The trick is to choose wisely, know what property is marketable, and have the means to get the money for the transaction. This article can provide you with some of the information that you need to succeed in real estate.

Think about any environmental concerns that the property poses. A thing that people are often worried about is that your commercial property may have hazardous waste problems. Regardless of whether or not you caused the problem, as the landowner it is your responsibility to fix it.

You should go ahead and advertise any commercial property for both far and local people. Many make a mistake in assuming that the only people who want to buy their commercial real estate property are those who are local buyers. There are many private investors who will buy affordable priced property in any area.

TIP! Unlike a home loan, you will need a higher percentage down payment for a commercial real estate loan. Looking for good lenders and great investments through the resources you can utilize will help you qualify for the loans you seek.

Your investment might prove to be time-consuming in the beginning. First you will need to find a property that you think is worth purchasing, and you may have to remodel or repair it. Do not become discouraged due to the time-consuming nature of this process. Your efforts will be rewarded.

If you are selecting a broker, ascertain the amount of experience they have had within the commercial real estate market. Make sure that they are experts in the area in which you are selling or buying. Also, consider entering into an agreement that will be exclusive between you and that broker.

TIP! You should meet with a tax adviser before you buy anything. A tax adviser can let you know how much money the buildings will cost you, and the amount of your income that will be taxable.

Carefully peruse the disclosure statements issued by the real estate agency you intend to hire. Never neglect the fact that you may be dealing with a ?dual agency.? When dual agency exists, the agency advocates for both parties in the transaction. When dual agency happens the Realtor on behalf of both parties. It should be disclosed if there?s a dual agency, along with an agreement by both parties.

Keep your eyes open for motivated sellers. Finding them should be your goal, particularly the ones most ready to offer you a below market deal. When you find the right deal, it really helps if the seller is motivated to sell quickly.

If inspections are included in your real estate transaction, as they usually are, make a request to see the inspectors? credentials. This guideline is especially important when working with people who deal in pest management; these specific fields are often populated by practitioners who lack proper credentials. By hiring an experienced professional, you?re less likely to run into problems after you buy the property.

TIP! Get yourself set up online before you buy any property. These days, a website is a must as are accounts on professional networking sites like LinkedIn.

Those who invest in commercial real estate should be aware that higher-than-usual inflation can wreck and otherwise-good investment. In the past, most leases had various built-in clauses that had their price adjusted to the CPI, which protected those who signed from inflation. Unfortunately, in today?s market, this practice is very seldom used. This can make you defenseless against the consequences of inflation.

Look for the opportunity to buy something big. Although you may feel overwhelmed by the number of units you will be responsible for in a large building, it actually doesn?t take more work to take care of large buildings successfully. Plus, larger buildings are cheaper in the long run?you pay less for each unit if the building has more units.

Remember that size is everything when you are shopping for a permanent space for a growing business. Purchasing a larger space that can accommodate growth ensures that you are not forced to repeat the shopping process in the near future.

TIP! If you plan to finance your commercial investments, you must first ensure that you are backed by a competent legal adviser. It is best to always be protected by a trustworthy, knowledgeable legal professional who can help you to resolve any issues that may arise.

As mentioned in this article, investing in commercial real estate takes work and should not be considered free money. It takes effort, time, and a lot of money (initially) to be successful. You will also have to take some risks.

1 killed, 1 wounded in bar shooting near Seattle

(AP) ? A 30-year-old Seattle man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting at a crowded bar in Bellevue, Wash., early Monday, police said.

The shooting broke out just after 1 a.m. at Munchbar at Bellevue Square, an upscale shopping center about 10 miles east of Seattle, said Carla Iafrate, a spokeswoman for the Bellevue Police Department.

Police officers were outside the bar when gunfire erupted because a large crowd had gathered there, she said.

More than 600 people were inside the venue at the time of the shooting. "It was a very complicated scene," Iafrate said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital. Iafrate did not immediately know his age or hometown.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident. No one has been arrested, and investigators were trying to put together a description of the shooter, she said.

No officers were involved in the shooting.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, telling local media they dove for cover or hit the floor when they heard gunshots.

An algal scene

A golden pennate diatom and a green euglenid, Phacus sp., industriously photosynthesising before the slide dries out. Perhaps unexpectedly for its appearance, the diatom can actually move, by secreting mucus to glide on through the raphe (a slit), and often quickly enough to screw up your photography. Luckily, this one was paused at that moment. The colour comes from its plastid, of the ?brown? algal category.

The euglenid?s surface is covered by proteinaceous strips making up its pellicle ? in many species, they slide against each other and enable metaboly, a pattern of movement that makes the euglenid feel ?squishy?. This genus, on the other hand, lacks the sliding ability of its pellicle strips, and sits rigidly in one shape. Inside are a big clear doughnut-shaped starch globule, a red eyespot used for seeking light, and numerous green plastids that were once inherited through secondary endosymbiosis of a green alga. Only a single clade of euglenids is photosynthetic ? the rest have never seen a plastid as anything other than a food item.

Sacks of potatoes stand in for humans in Boeing's in-air Wi-Fi tests

15 hrs.

CHICAGO (AP) -?If the wireless Internet connection during your holiday flight seems more reliable than it used to, you could have the humble potato to thank.?

While major airlines offer in-flight Wi-Fi on many flights, the signal strength can be spotty. Airlines and aircraft makers have been striving to improve this with the growing use of wireless devices and the number of people who don't want to be disconnected, even 35,000 feet up.?

"That's where potatoes come into the picture," Boeing spokesman Adam Tischler said.?Engineers at Chicago-based Boeing Co. used sacks of potatoes as stand-ins for passengers as they worked to eliminate weak spots in in-flight wireless signals. They needed full planes to get accurate results during signal testing, but they couldn't ask people to sit motionless for days while data was gathered.?

It turns out that potatoes ? because of their water content and chemistry ? absorb and reflect radio wave signals much the same way as the human body does, making them suitable substitutes for airline passengers.?

"It's a testament to the ingenuity of these engineers. They didn't go in with potatoes as the plan," Tischler said.?

Recapping the serendipitous path that led to better onboard wireless, Tischler said a member of the research team stumbled across an article in the Journal of Food Science describing research in which 15 vegetables and fruits were evaluated for their dielectric properties, or the way they transmit electric force without conduction.?

Its conclusions led the Boeing researchers to wonder if potatoes might serve just as well as humans during their own signal testing. Despite some skepticism, they ended up buying 20,000 pounds of them.?

Video and photos of the work, which started in 2006, show a decommissioned airplane loaded with row upon row of potato sacks that look like large, lumpy passengers. The sacks sit eerily still in the seats as the engineers collect data on the strength of wireless signals in various spots.?

The Boeing engineers added some complicated statistical analysis and the result was a proprietary system for fine tuning Internet signals so they would be strong and reliable wherever a laptop was used on a plane.?

Boeing says the system also ensures Wi-Fi signals won't interfere with the plane's sensitive navigation and communications equipment.?

"From a safety standpoint, you want to know what the peak signals are, what's the strongest signal one of our communications and navigation systems might see from a laptop or 150 laptops or 350 laptops," Boeing engineer Dennis Lewis explains in a video.?

In a nod to the humor in using a tuber to solve a high-tech problem, researchers dubbed the project Synthetic Personnel Using Dialectic Substitution, or SPUDS.?

The company says better Wi-Fi signals can be found already on three Boeing aircraft models flown by major airlines: 777, 747-8 and the 787 Dreamliner.

Activist Post: ViaSat Military Communications and US Ignite Ensure ...

Susanne Posel, Contributor
Activist Post

ViaSat provides communications services for the US Military and private sector. The technology they utilize is speedy, secure and efficient as to be utilized in any location both terrestrial and in space. They mostly offer different types of satellite networks for both mobile and fixed communication stations. Antenna and wireless systems are available for combat situation awareness. Encrypted data storage, IP mobile networks, microprocessor chipsets, RF system design and training systems are just some of the services provided by ViaSat.

In 2010, ViaSat acquired WildBlue which competed?with HugesNet to become the most powerful satellite corporation. This marked the beginning of first-generation broadband satellites which was a burgeoning business at the time.

The Department of Defense (DoD) became entangled with Cisco and therefore involved in the first router sent into space for commercial use. This marked the inception of Cisco?s Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) program that promised to make connectivity faster using satellites instead of routing through the ground.

IRIS was a radiation-tolerant IP router which was used by the DoD in 2009 under the Joint Capabilities Technology Demonstration (JCTD) initiative.

ViaSat launched their satellite-based Internet to incite the provocation of WiFi to corporations like JetBlue.

With the development and implementation of the High Throughput Satellite, the KA-SAT, from Eutelsat Communications, the sharing of telecom services could now be concentrated throughout the world. Using spotbeams, communication networks servicing 10 ground networks would bring the promise of more powerful connections.

Eutelsat has provided broadband Internet to all of Europe through the KA-SAT. This endeavor was sanctioned by the European Union to bring broadband access to all citizens in the EuroZone by 2013.

Satellite broadband has become?a growing business and the answer to connectivity issues with revenues expected to reach $9 billion by 2020. ViaSat is at the forefront of this industry by ?remaking the general public perception of satellite being a ?fast resort? service and offering a product that compares favorably to ADSL services in many unserved or underserved markets.?

In 2011, ViaSat launched a $400 million satellite called ViaSat1, which was slated to bring broadband to rural America. This launching marked a $1 billion initiative to create an orbiting satellite that would supply Internet to previously unconnected areas, which was risky at the time. ViaSat was also commissioned with providing network ground equipment such as satellite modems, data links and other services associated with the Internet.

The development at ViaSat?s Exede broadband services , also officered through Dis Network offers better connectivity with broadband than DSL connections because of ViaSat1. This satellite works in conjunction with WildBlue satellites (also owned by ViaSat). Between the two, ViaSat provides satellite broadband for the entire continental US.

ViaSat, being a US government?controlled private sector corporation, is the perfect complement to US Ignite, the future of broadband internet.

In June of this year, President Obama signed the?executive order?entitled ?Accelerating Broadband Infrastructure Deployment? which supposed to ?facilitate broadband deployment on Federal lands, buildings, and rights of way, federally assisted highways and tribal and individual Indian trust lands (tribal lands), and particularly in underserved communities.?

However, with the EO came the creation of US Ignite, which is a 6-year plan to create private-public partnerships (PPP) with the areas a ?national security?; as defined:

  • Education
  • Workforce development
  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Health
  • Transportation
  • Public safety
  • Clean energy
Focusing collaborative effort with private sector corporations and federal agencies, the goal?is to ?link universities and a growing number of communities with networks that are 10-100 times faster than today?s residential broadband Internet services.?

Under the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, the UN?s Millennium Development Goals will be met as their universal portal will become the centralized broadband Internet provider to the world.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has been in talks this month, discussing how to insert major telecommunication and information corporations to devise a treaty that will regulate important aspects of the Internet, as well as create jurisdiction over telecoms and ICT industries. This international treaty will effectively control all communication as we know it.

This includes:

  • Internet
  • Cell phones
  • E-mails
  • Faxes
  • Satellites
  • Governmental intelligence networks
  • All other digital communications
