Five varieties of cells investigated; none apparently active in CNS repair
Putnam Valley, NY. (Dec. 20, 2012) When different types of cells are transplanted with the intent of having them aid in repairing central nervous system (CNS) trauma, what is the fate and function of those cells? A Belgian research team carried out research aimed at answering this question by determining how five varieties of cells - neural stem cells, mouse embryonic fibroblasts, dendritic cells, bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) and splenocytes - functioned and survived after transplantation in the CNS.
Their study is published in a recent issue of Cell Transplantation (21:9), now freely available on-line at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/ct/.
"Severe injuries to the central nervous system due to trauma are among the top five causes of death and represent a significant social and economic health burden on society," said Dr. Peter Ponsaerts of the University of Antwerp. "There are no currently effective treatments to restore damaged or dysfunctional neural tissues, although much progress is expected to come from stem cell research."
Their research investigated how factors such as cell migration, cell graft survival, cell graft immunogenicity and cell graft toxicity are impacted two weeks post-transplantation. Their study examined the fate and function of the five varieties of cells mentioned above after they were transplanted into the CNS of transgenic mice, both healthy and those modeled with CNS injury with subsequent inflammation.
"We did not see a significant increase for any cell types in cell migration under inflammatory conditions when compared to healthy conditions," said the authors. "With regard to cell graft survival, to our surprise, only a few of the cells were able to survive under both healthy and inflammatory conditions."
However, they found "striking differences" in how endogenous immune responses against grafted cells were organized. They speculated that differences were due to both the degree of microglia and astrocyte invasion. Responses of both were observed in each different cell variety. BMMNC and splenocyte grafts were less invaded by microglia, but displayed high levels of astrocyte invasion.
Finally, with regard to cell graft toxicity, the researchers found that "none of the cell populations could directly contribute to remyelination." They speculated that two weeks might not be sufficient time for proper differentiation of grafted NSCs, although endogenous remyelination does occur within a two-week time period.
"Our results warrant further research to better understand and eventually control cell graft induced tissue damage and activation of the brain's innate immune system," they wrote.

Similar in some ways to DYMO Stamps Online 2.5 (Free, 4.5 stars), Pitney Bowes pbSmartPostage (Free, $14.99 per month, or $16.99 per month) offers the same basic capability. pbSmartPostage lets you print your own stamps and other postage, eliminating the chore and wasted time of running out to the post office and standing in line. Unlike Dymo Stamps Online, which works with any printer even with the free version, pbSmartPostage limits its free tier to Brother label-printer owners. However its paid versions work with virtually any inkjet or laser printer.
As I pointed out in my review of DYMO Stamps Online, whether you prefer your postage printing software to run completely in the cloud or to run on your computer as a client app that connects to a cloud based server is largely a matter of personal taste. A key argument in favor of an online app like pbSmartPostage is precisely that it runs in the cloud. You don't have to download or install any software, and you don't have to worry about updates when postal rates change or Pitney Bowes adds a new feature. The next time you log on to the website, the change will simply be there.
That said, if you tend to print stamps and labels one at a time instead of in batches, you may well consider it annoying to have to enter your user name and password every time you want to print something. If so, you'll probably prefer a program that runs on your own system, like our current Editors' Choice, DYMO Stamps and DYMO Printable Postage version 2.5 (Free, 4.5 stars).
If you're not sure which approach you like better, you should particularly appreciate pbSmartPostage's 60-day free trial. If you have any doubts about using a cloud-based service, 60 days will give you plenty of time to try it and decide whether you like it.
The Basics Setting up an account is straightforward, with three choices for the type of account. If you have one of the Brother label printers that work with pbSmartPostage, including, for example, the Editors' Choice Brother QL-700, you can sign up at www.pb.com/brother for a free account.
The free account will let you print individual stamps using a Brother label printer or print stamp sheets using any laser or inkjet?although you have to buy the stamp rolls and sheets separately from Pitney Bowes. (More on that in a moment.)? It won't let you print postage directly on envelopes or print labels for packages. For that, you need one of the paid tiers, which you can sign up for whether you have a Brother label printer or not.
If you already have a free account, you can upgrade it to a paid account whenever you like. To start with a paid account, you can go to www.pbsmartpostage.com to register, enter your billing information, and order stamp sheets. The $14.99 per month Standard choice includes unlimited use, except for the cost of postage and stamp sheets or other supplies, and also includes two free stamp sheets.
The $16.99 Preferred choice adds a 5-pound postage scale that connects to your computer by USB cable, to let you weigh your mail or package and automatically set the right amount of postage to print. (At least, it's supposed to. Pitney Bowes didn't supply one for testing.)? Alternatively, you can also buy any of several scales, at prices ranging from $49.99 to $105.99 (direct) and capacities of 5 to 70 pounds, and not have to pay the extra $2 per month.
Additional Costs and Potential Savings How much pbSmartPostage will actually cost, or potentially save, depends entirely on how you use it. For the free service, you have to buy stamp rolls or sheets. The price varies with how many rolls or sheets you buy at a time, at $15.29 or $17.99 for a roll of 200 stamp labels, or $6.40 to $7.49 for a pack of five label sheets with 125 stamp labels per pack.
For either of the paid tiers, you can also use the rolls or sheets, but you don't have to. Instead of printing stamps, you can print postage directly on envelopes. And for packages, you can print labels on plain paper.
In addition to the potential cost of supplies, you also have to pay for postage. However, once you get beyond printing stamps, there's a possibility of saving money with US Postal Service (USPS) discounted rates. Also worth mention is that although you can get discounted rates for some classes of mail directly from the USPS Web site (take a look at https://www.prioritymail.com/online_discounts.asp for details), there are some classes of mail, including First Class Parcel and Media Mail, for example, that you can't print labels for from the USPS site, but can print with pbSmartPostage.
Printing Stamps and Labels For my tests I used several printers, including a Brother label printer and two standard desktop printers that can print on up to legal-size paper. The only problem I ran into was with printing directly on an envelope with one of the standard printers, with pbSmartPostage insisting that the envelope was the wrong size.
According to Pitney Bowes, the real problem is that this particular printer won't allow printing to the edge of the envelope, which USPS regulations require. The company says this is an issue for only a few printers. Even so, before you sign up with pbSmartPostage, you might want to look at the FAQs on the support section of Pitney Bowes Web site to find out if your printer is on the list of printers that are known to work or known not to work.
Printing is otherwise easy enough and worked as promised in my tests. For stamps, an onscreen wizard with self-explanatory options takes you through the steps of choosing what to print on?a stamp sheet, a roll, or an envelope?setting the postage amount and how many stamps to print, and then printing.
With stamp sheets, you can specify different postage values for each stamp and print a full sheet with up to 25 stamps at a time. With rolls or envelopes you can print only one stamp value at a time, but can print as many as 25 stamps or envelopes. Other useful features for envelopes include optionally adding a mailing address, a return address, and a QR code (a two-dimensional bar code that can translate to plain text, a URL, an email address, or a telephone number). You can also save mailing addresses and QR codes so you can pick them from a list to reuse later.
A separate wizard for labels takes you through a similar series of steps, with choices for defining the box type (including choices like the USPS flat rate box); choices for class of mail;, options to add additional services, including signature confirmation and insurance; and too many other options to even list here. One last feature that demands mention, however, is the option to track a package by picking from a list of labels that you've created.
Whether Pitney Bowes pbSmartPostage is worth considering depends partly on whether you're looking at the free version or one of the tiers with a monthly fee. If you have a Brother label printer, it's almost certainly worth taking advantage of the free version, no matter how few stamps you print, for the convenience of not having to run out to the post office. Beyond that, you might or might not need labels often enough for the convenience of printing them to be worth the monthly price?or if you might even save money that way. If the answer isn't clear, it's certainly worth taking advantage of the 60-day free trial to give pbSmartPostage a test drive and find out.

Because this involves scraping data from more webpages, the very first time you run the application it will spend quite a while in the "Talking to iStock: Gathering data..." phase.? How long depends on quite a few factors including, of course, how good a signal your phone has and whether it's connected by 2G, 3G or Wifi.? Best to set it running and go make yourself a sandwich and a cup of tea (or a pie and a pint if that's more your thing).? Subsequent refreshes will be much faster (unless you have hundreds of sales and don't refresh for days).

That's odd. I just checked with my phone to make sure that it is still active and all looks fine. I took a look through the web logs and I don't see any Android browsers connecting for the last couple of days. My first thought was that you might be using one of the 3rd party browsers that are in beta-test, but I don't see any connections from them, either. Do you remember roughly what day and time you looked with your phone's browser (and what timezone you're in!) because I'd really like to get to the bottom of it if there's a problem on the server. However, on a different note...now that I have an API key from istock, I'm completely rewriting the application. It might be worth holding off for a little while whilst I knock it into shape.

still the same thing (i refreshed three times), also the browser that i use is the default built in one..

Thanks for trying again. My best guess is that there's a cache somewhere between your phone and the livestock webserver and it's feeding you old pages. My phone doesn't seem to give me a cached page, so I wonder if it's a difference between the USA and UK services, or if you're on some non-standard service.
When I have a stable version of the app I'll submit it to the Android Marketplace (it'll still be free) and any such problems should go away. Sorry that it's being a pain for you in the meantime

Is this still in the works?? This would be especially useful now that the iStock page is slightly mangled in the Android browser (the main toolbar gets wrapped around under the search bar).

Development of LiveStock is on hold for the time being. I'm hoping to put some time aside in the next few weeks in order to knock it into a decent shape.
If I don't find time to do that, I'll put out the version that's currently on my phone. This doesn't do much more than let you know you've had a sale and what you've earned.

Heh - actually, the reasons for delay have changed somewhat. The chap in the Glasgow store where I got my phone told me that I was one of the first people to get a G1 from them, and that I was definitely the first to bring one in for repair. I don't expect it back for at least another couple of weeks...hopefully I can then make some more progress.

A positive update, at last. My G1 has been repaired and returned. I'm re-implementing LiveStock, building on what I learned about programming for the G1 first time around. I'm planning on releasing an alpha version of LiveStock2 in the next few days: - the new version will be simpler than the old version to avoid using up the G1's resources so quickly - this should result in fewer bugs and better battery life; - I'll be releasing through the Android Market rather than my own web pages - that means installing and upgrading between versions will be more straightforward. I understand that it takes a little while for an application to work its way through the Market after release, so I'll not announce its availability until it's actually visible.

I'm happy to announce that a new version of LiveStock is now available. It is available (for free!) from the Android Market. You'll find it in the Market in Applications->Tools, or just search for "livestock".
The current version is 2.0.14 alpha (as of 17 April 2009); this is a complete rewrite of the previous version of the application. Although it is usable and, I think, useful, I'd like to stress that this should be considered alpha quality software.
I am aware of a few flaws. In particular, the first time you run it it can take a long time to pull some of your information from the istock servers. This pull really should happen in a background thread - because it doesn't, your phone may warn you that LiveStock is taking a long time to respond. If that happens, just touch the "Wait" button. This is the item highest on my priority list to fix.
The first time you run it, it will ask you to enter your istock login details. I strongly recommend that you touch the "Test" button before saving so that LiveStock can attempt a connection to the iStock servers to check you entered them correctly.
The main screen will display some current stats and your most recent downloads.
From the main screen, just touch the refresh button and it will pull your current details from istock.
This is still an early version and there are many things I want to improve and features I want to add. First on the list of things to fix is the horrible delay the first time you pull data from istock. The next most important feature is to make LiveStock run as a service so that it automatically pulls data from istock at regular intervals. Once that is done, it will be able to notify you as sales happen.
Of course, this isn't istock-supported software so please direct your complaints, plaudits, requests, rants, bug reports, etc to me either in this thread or via sitemail.

I've just pushed a new version (2.0.15) to the Market. If you look for Livestock in the market and you already have 2.0.14 installed, you will be given the option to update.
The main change in 2.0.15 is that the disturbing silence (or even more disturbing Force Close/Wait dialog) when refreshing the list of recent downloads is now replaced by a progress indicator - no more wondering whether or not there's anything happening. A lesser, but related, change is that there is now a "Refresh recent DLs" option from the Menu button to force an update of the recent downloads list.
Please let me know if these changes don't seem to work for you, or if other issues appear.
The current plan is for the next release to run as a service and automatically inform you of sales - no more having to hit Refresh.

I'm pleased to announce that I've just pushed a new version (v2.1.0) of LiveStock to the Android Market. If you search for Livestock in the market on your Android phone you have the option to install or, if you have an earlier version installed already, to upgrade.
There are a number of changes in this release: - the list of recent downloads does not update automatically. You can request an update simply with MENU->Refresh Recent DLs. This was made manual as updating the DL list involves a fair amount of network traffic which helps run down your phone's battery. - you don't need to request that Livestock checks to see if you've had a sale. Instead it runs in the background and automatically checks for any changes to your balance. If your balance changes, you get a notification. (But see my note below!) - a few minor cosmetic changes. - quite a few small bugs have been squashed.
Automatic Checks Every 20 minutes or so, LiveStock will check to see if your balance has changed. If it does change, LiveStock posts a notification.
If your phone is in sleep-mode (i.e. when the screen has blanked), LiveStock will not wake the phone to check the balance. Waking the phone seems to be relatively power-hungry and it runs the battery down far too quickly. I hope to improve this in future. However, if some other application wakes the phone then LiveStock will take the opportunity to do its checks.
I hope you like the changes. Please do let me know of any bugs or strange experiences, or feature requests you may have.
Edit: I should add, this has been tested on both the older version of Android (1.1) and the new "cupcake" release (1.5).

Hi,
Most of the time if i open your app it says "stats updated" and if i close it and then open it it will give the new stats. I have never seen a notification about automatic stats update after 20 minutes. It only gives this message if i have the app opened. Am i missing something?
I love this app! thanks for your hard work.

Hmmm...I've seen the same thing some days, but not always. In a future version I'll try triggering the notifications a different way and see if that helps.
If I can get to the bottom of it, I'll put out a new version in the next couple of days. If I can't find the problem immediately, it will probably be a couple of weeks before I put out a new version due to other commitments.

I've completely rewritten the automated checking and it now works in a way that I think you'll like. The checking also does less processing, which means less drain on the battery. Which means LiveStock can now check for and notify you of sales even when the phone is sleeping.
I'll delay releasing it until after Thursday night's downtime just in case there are any site changes that would affect LiveStock.
