Candidate's HQ attacked as vote polarizes Egypt

CAIRO (Reuters) - An attack on the offices of one of the two finalists in Egypt's presidential race has sounded a warning that the last round of voting might spark more violence in a nation polarized by the choice between an Islamist and an ex-general from Hosni Mubarak's era.

Protesters set fire to storage rooms and smashed computers late on Monday at the campaign headquarters of Ahmed Shafiq, a 70-year-old former air force chief and premier under Mubarak, who was confirmed as a run-off candidate after the first round.

His rival is Mohamed Mursi, 60, of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's main Islamist group, which already controls the biggest bloc in parliament. Mursi offered concessions on Tuesday in a bid to win endorsements from rivals who lost the race last week.

Though he and Shafiq each took almost a quarter of votes cast, that leaves a big section of Egypt's 50 million eligible voters who are wary of having either a conservative Islamist or a former military man in charge. They face a wrenching decision in the run-off vote on June 16 and 17. Some say they won't vote.

"We either choose a politicized Islamic group which will crush civil liberties or the old regime," said lawyer Sherif El Hosseny, 34. "I am not sure whether I will even be voting."

Also grappling with the choice are the more secular-minded activists from the April 6 youth movement, which united protesters against Mubarak and his ruling party. For them, their revolution has been hijacked by Islamists and the old guard.

"The choice is between bad and worse, between a group that monopolizes religion and power or the return of (Mubarak's) party," said Mahmoud Afify, an April 6 spokesman, adding the group was talking to Mursi to see if it could win guarantees to back him.

Shafiq has made no secret of his admiration for Mubarak, describing him as a role model after his own father. Protesters threw stones and shoes at him when he voted in Cairo last week.

The attack on Shafiq's offices was the latest flare-up in a messy and often bloody transition to democracy since generals took over from Mubarak after an uprising forced him out on February 11, 2011. The army has pledged to hand over power by July.

Even before the first-round vote, revolutionaries who led the demonstrations that brought down Mubarak had promised to take to the streets if Shafiq progressed in the vote to become president of the Arab world's most populous nation.

"The situation in Egypt is in a critical and dangerous phase. We must work together so that the revolution isn't lost," Fareed Ismail, a senior figure in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters.

Yet any violence could help Shafiq's cause as his strongest card in the race is his promise swiftly to restore law and order, which collapsed after Mubarak's downfall. Many believe the army will back him to deliver on that promise.

The military insists it is neutral in the race.

BROADENING APPEAL

Thousands of Egyptians marched on Monday night in protest after the results of the first round were confirmed by the election committee. "No to Shafiq and to the Brotherhood. The revolution is still in the square," they chanted.

In his bid to broaden the group's appeal beyond its disciplined network of supporters who propelled him to the run-off, Mursi indicated he was offering vice-president posts and even the prime minister's position to people outside his group.

"I am committed to the presidency being an institution. It will never be an individual," Mursi told a news conference.

Mursi, who said in his campaign he would implement Islamic law without spelling out what that meant in practice, sought to assuage some liberal fears by saying no one would force women to wear the hijab, the Islamic veil that many already wear.

Mursi also said he wanted to work with Christians, who make up a 10th of Egypt's 82 million people and fear Islamist rule.

In Cairo, some protesters held posters of Mursi with a cross over his face. But most chanted against Shafiq, who has support from many ordinary Egyptians who want a strongman to restore stability and revive the economy after 15 months of turmoil.

Dozens marched from protests around Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands had gathered when toppling Mubarak, to Shafiq's headquarters in the upscale Cairo district of Dokki.

"They seemed to know what they were after and they went directly to the storage rooms and set them on fire using petrol bombs," said Ahmed Abdel Ghani, 30, a member of Shafiq's campaign, surveying a scene of unusable, charred campaign flyers and leaflets scattered on the ground.

The main villa escaped the flames but protesters smashed laptops and computers inside, he said. Daubed on the wall outside the villa were the words: "No to Shafiq, no to feloul," an Arabic word referring to "remnants" of Mubarak's era.

NO APOLOGY

"We condemn the attack but we still don't know who is behind it and will wait for investigations. But we are continuing our work and path and hopefully all will end well," said one official in the campaign, who asked not to be named.

Both Shafiq and Mursi may need to reach out to more centrist voters to ensure they win the run-off.

Although he makes no apology for his past and takes pride in his strong ties with the military, Shafiq needs to prove he will not revive the autocratic state apparatus protesters sought to dismantle. The army and the hated police force are still intact.

Liberal and other political groups have often criticized the Brotherhood for being slow to join the anti-Mubarak revolt, acquiescing too quickly to the ruling generals and seeking to dominate the political scene after their parliamentary success.

Mursi's backers believe Mursi and the Brotherhood, with its broad grass-roots network, is best placed to reform the state.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a leftist candidate who came third in the race, is being courted by the Brotherhood. Like other politicians, he condemned the attack on Shafiq's offices.

Fourth-placed ex-Brotherhood member Abdol Moneim Abol Fotouh has called for backers to "stand united against the symbols of corruption and oppression" - a reference to Shafiq - but has not explicitly backed Mursi.

Like Sabahy, fifth-placed former Arab League chief Amr Moussa, once a favorite, has not backed either candidate.

The ultra-orthodox Salafi Muslim Al-Nour party, which controls the second biggest bloc in parliament and had backed Abol Fotouh, has thrown its weight behind Mursi.

Four candidates complained about the vote conduct but the election committee dismissed all the complaints.

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter said he was broadly confident about the election process although Carter Center monitors highlighted several irregularities, notably lack of access in the final aggregation of national results.

Arab League monitors noted irregularities but said they were not enough to affect the result.

Kevin Rushing, Former Marine, Helps Bring Gaming To Detroit

As part of their mission, Rushing and his brother recently organized punk rock dodgeball at the Russell Industrial Center, and started trying to raise funds for an assault course based on the '90s television show "Gladiators."

The Rushings also received a CAMP Detroit grant to create an installation, called the Krush Arcade Experience, that will debut at this weekend's Movement Electronic Music Festival and will appear at other city events in the future. It is an arcade machine emulator loaded with old school arcade games, in a tent filled with lights and lasers for an '80s vibe.

"We both really love Detroit and are passionately involved in making it a successful community," Rushing said.

The veteran's ideas are also backed up by recent research, which has suggested that playing video games like Tetris may minimize flashbacks and other psychological symptoms following trauma.

Though the brothers plan future Krush Industries projects, Rushing is also digging into the psychology of gaming and its role in society. He's interested in how elements of gaming, like competitions and receiving incentives for completing tasks -- such as getting points for spending money on a credit card -- can be used in daily life.

"Entertainment will have to be more engaging and thoughtful," Kevin said about his vision of the future of Krush Industries. "There's an ethical portion to this and a community-forward portion that we think will make it more than just an entertainment facility."

For Rushing, his dedication stems from his positive experience with gaming, whether in training competitions with the Marines, arcades or Gladiator challenge courses.

"The thing about playing games and competing," he said, "is you lose yourself in it."

In this 5.5 year marriage case where the husband was the primary breadwinner and where he had used inherited monies to purchase assets the court felt the normal rule of equal division of family assets based on the concept that homemaking and breadwinning are of equal value was found not to have applied. As such the husband received for more than half of the assets at the end of this short term relationship. The concept often applied to short marriages is that there should not be a significant monetary windfall to either spouse arising from a short marriage.

[1]???????????? This is a family law proceeding in which the contested issues are financial.? The parties were married for approximately five and a half years, and lived together for about a year prior to marriage.? Both parties were around age 40 when they got together.? Although they are divorced, I will refer to the parties as the husband and the wife.

[2]???????????? The appellant wife came into the union with financial difficulties and the respondent husband took steps to ameliorate those difficulties.? It is fair to say that the husband was in a much more financially productive situation than the wife for most of the duration of the union.? Fortunately, the wife was able to secure a position with the husband?s employer during the latter portion of their years together and, although she was not earning at the level of the husband, she could anticipate steady employment at a reasonable level of remuneration.? Around the time the parties separated in the spring of 2009, the husband had an earnings level in the $90,000 range and the wife had an earnings level in the $40,000 range.

[3]???????????? During the marriage, the wife performed most household duties and helped renovate the family home.? She also assisted with some work on the premises of her mother-in-law.? She was not earning significant sums during most years of the marriage.? However, the income that she did earn was deposited into a joint account, which was topped up by the husband as needed to finance household expenses.? Near the end of the union, both parties began to deposit 80% of their earnings into the joint account, and mortgage payments began to be made using these funds.? Not long before the parties separated, the husband received an inheritance that allowed him to pay off the debts secured against the condominium property in which the parties resided.

[4]???????????? The husband was very much the financial engine of the union until the last year or two before the separation occurred.? Counsel for the appellant submits that this circumstance was given undue weight by the trial judge in his orders relating to the division of family property.? Counsel for the respondent submits that the judge was simply taking a realistic view of the financial history of the relationship, and says the discretionary orders of the judge ought to be given due deference by this Court.? Counsel for the respondent refers to the following passage from the recent case of Karisik v. Chow, 2010 BCCA 548, 12 B.C.L.R. (5th) 107:

[51]????? The exercise of a trial judge?s discretion in making an order for reapportionment under s.?65(1) of the [Family Relations Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c.?128] is entitled to considerable deference, absent a demonstrated material error, a serious misapprehension of the evidence, or an error of law: Hickey v. Hickey, [1999] 2 S.C.R. 518 at para.?12. As was stated in [Elsom v. Elsom, [1989] 1 S.C.R. 1367] at 1374-75:

Courts of Appeal should be highly reluctant to interfere with the exercise of a trial judge?s discretion. It is he who has the advantage of hearing the parties and is in the best position to weigh the equities of a case. The principle of non-interference has been emphasized by this court in a number of cases concerning the division of family property.

? an appellant court will be justified in intervening in a trial judge?s exercise of his discretion only if the trial judge misdirects himself or if his decision is so clearly wrong as to amount to an injustice.

5]???????????? The largest asset to be assessed and divided was the family home.? When the parties got together, the respondent?s condominium had a value of around $140,000, although it seems the net value of the asset after accounting for debt was about $75,000.? At the trial date the property was valued at $325,000, debt free.? The judge made the following disposition concerning this asset:

[55]????? The defendant is entitled to reapportionment under s.?65(1)(a)(c)(d) and (f) of the Family Relations Act. He may not have acquired the home itself through inheritance but he did acquire full equity in the home through use of his inheritance monies to pay off the encumbrances.

[56]????? The plaintiff does have some need to become and remain economically independent and self-sufficient as set out in s.?65(1)(f) because she really has little by way of assets and only her employment income to fall back on.

[57]????? In my view an appropriate reapportionment of the matrimonial home would be 80% of its increase in value during marriage to the defendant and 20% to the plaintiff. That would oblige the defendant to buy out the plaintiff?s 20% interest in the increase for an amount of $36,800, being 20% of the difference between its present value of $325,000 and its assessed value as of July 1, 2003 of $141,000.

[6]???????????? Counsel for the appellant submits the judge erred in his disposition of this asset in two respects.? First, it is asserted that the judge erred in considering only the increase in value of the family home during the marriage.? Even if this approach was not in error, it is submitted that the judge got the numbers wrong by failing to consider the net value of the condominium at the outset of the union, which would result in a larger appreciation figure.? Counsel also contends that an equal division of the property should have been ordered.

[7]???????????? The parties? union was comparatively short, and the property was debt free at the time of separation as a result of the husband?s use of his inheritance money to pay off the debts secured against the property.? Having regard to all the circumstances related to this property, I consider we should give proper deference to the decision of the trial judge to order an unequal division.? That said, however, I consider the judge did err by not considering the entire value of the property as the baseline for division, and not just the increase in value. ?I consider he ought to have awarded a larger sum to the wife, namely 20% of $325,000.? Counsel can work out the numbers, but the sum due to the wife ought to be fixed at something in the range of $65,000 as opposed to the $36,800 ordered by the judge.

[8]???????????? When the parties got together, the husband had two RRSP plans, one which was referred to as a locked-in plan from previous employment, as well as a self-administered plan.? Some gains occurred in both plans over the course of the union.? For some reason, the judge did not treat the locked-in plan as a family asset, a result counsel for the respondent rightly concedes is not sustainable on the authorities.? As to the self-directed RRSP, counsel for the appellant submits that the judge selected the wrong date for valuation of the plan, which should have been valued as of the date of trial: see Blackett v. Blackett (1989), 40 B.C.L.R. (2d) 99, 63 D.L.R. (4th) 18 (B.C.C.A.).

[12]???????? In an ideal world, this issue should perhaps be remitted for the consideration of the trial court.? However, I consider this course of action would impose undue cost burdens on the parties.? In my view, the state of the record permits us to assess what should now be done with respect to this asset.? The respondent, referring to Kordysz v. Kordysz, [1999] B.C.J. No.?360, affirmed by this Court in 2001 BCCA 355, submits that, considering the comparatively short duration of the parties? relationship and the fact that the RRSP was accumulated entirely before the marriage, this asset should be wholly reapportioned to the respondent.? Having regard to the history of accumulation of the locked-in RRSP, I consider it would be appropriate to order that the wife should receive one quarter of the amount of the appreciation of this asset during the marriage to the date of trial.

In the end result the husband received the lion?s share of the assets he had either brought into the marriage or contributed to through an inheritance. This approach is consistent with the concept that if the parties work together to acquire assets in either a short or long marriage they will be likely shared equally subject to the factors for reapportionment but that when it can be shown the concept of equal contribution of effort has not occurred whether by one party bringing a significant amount of assets into the marriage or receiving a gift or inheritance to them alone during the marriage reapportionment may well occur. The new laws coming into ?effect shortly will seek to exclude the value of assets brought into a relationship or received by one party to gift or inheritance and share only the gain. ? Given this change in the law coming in the next year is expected that the test to depart from an equal division of the gain ?will be harder given the new test of ?significantly unfair?. ?different strategies will apply for spouses in considering whether the current legislation or new legislation favours them more. Former star Neeskens seeks first trophy as coach

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Former Netherlands midfield star Johan Neeskens hopes to step out from the shadows Saturday and claim his first title as a coach.

He guides Mamelodi Sundowns against neighbours SuperSport United in an all-Pretoria South African FA Cup final before an expected 35,000 sell-out crowd at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Each club won away to the other in the just-ended South African Premiership and SuperSport and Sundowns finished third and fourth on the table respectively behind champions Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows.

Neeskens, a tall, slim, fair-haired 60-year-old, was used to success as a vital cog in the all-conquering Ajax Amsterdam team of the 1970s that took its inspiration from the legendary Johan Cruyff.

He has also experienced glory as assistant coach to another former Dutch great, Frank Rijkaard, at Barcelona and Galatasaray, but never on his own in spells with four Dutch clubs.

For much of the South African league season, Neeskens seemed set to end the trophy drought as his expensively-assembled squad built a solid lead only to throw it away with losses to lowly opponents during the run-in.

"We did a lot of practice on our finishing and in virtually every game we created five or six good scoring opportunities without taking them and if you fail to score you cannot win," explained Neeskens.

There was one notable exception to this shyness in front of goal as Sundowns created a record South African winning margin by triumphing 24-0 away to amateur outfit Powerlines in the first round of the Cup.

Zimbabwean Nyasha Mushekwi scored six goals in that incredible goal spree and another four in three subsequent ties en route to a final that offers $720,000 to the winners plus a place in the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup.

With injuries sidelining South Africa striker Katlego Mphela for much of the season, the burden has fallen increasingly on Mushekwi to score with no team-mate hitting the net regularly.

SuperSport won three Premiership titles before Pirates took the last two and coach Gavin Hunt is seeking a first Cup triumph with a club that continually loses their best players to richer Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns.

National squad centre-back Morgan Gould skippers United for the final time this weekend before reportedly heading to success-starved Chiefs, where he is guaranteed a much bigger salary and greater media attention.

Hunt loves nothing more than indulging in mind games with opponents and the media and has created the impression this week that his team stand little chance of equalling the three South African Cup successes of Sundowns.

"Sundowns have quality players while all we have is organisation and big hearts," claimed the man whose sole South African Cup success came with Moroka Swallows eight years ago.

Neeskens is unlikely to be lulled into a false sense of superiority, though, with SuperSport recovering from a mid-season goal drought to show good league and cup form lately with Thabiso Nkoana a valuable addition to the strike force.

RABAT, Morocco (AP) ? Morocco's glittering Mawazine international music festival wraps up this weekend with performances by Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz, after nine days of showcasing the North African kingdom's cool factor ? even as dissident Moroccan musicians are imprisoned for their anti-establishment lyrics.

The 11-year-old "Rhythms of the World" festival in the capital Rabat has always highlighted Morocco's contradictions as the country spends millions to lure top world artists to perform at generally free concerts, while much the country remains mired in poverty.

In past years the festival has been attacked by Islamists for inviting gay performer Elton John in 2010 and by activists for the cost of attracting Shakira and other high profile acts in 2011, but this year the theme of protest is freedom of expression.

Just a week before the festival began, Human Rights Watch slammed Morocco for sentencing a rapper to a year in prison for lyrics deemed insulting to police ? a common theme in rap music elsewhere in the world.

"Morocco hosts one famous international music festival after another each spring, but meanwhile it imprisons one of its own singers solely because of lyrics and images that displease the authorities," Sarah Leah Whitson, Mideast director of the group said in a statement. "Morocco should be known as a haven for world music, not for locking up singers with a political message."

Moroccan rapper Mouad Belghouat, known as El-Haqed, or "The Enraged" was convicted on May 11 of "showing contempt" to public servants with his song "Dogs of the State" about police corruption. He is known for his political activism and vitriolic songs attacking social injustice, the monarchy and corruption.

A week later, dissident poet Youssef Belkhdim was convicted of attacking police ? a charge he denies ? at a sit-in he organized in support of Belghouat and sentenced to two years in prison.

The two men belonged to Morocco's pro-democracy February 20 movement that last year brought tens of thousands into the streets protesting corruption and calling for political reform.

The extravagant sums spent on the Mawazine have been a mainstay of the movement's slogans. Festival organizers maintain that the Mawazine's estimated $7 million price tag is worth it because it improves Morocco's image abroad and gives people at home access to music from around the world. The festival is funded largely by corporate sponsors with strong ties to the state.

"It's a celebration. It's a celebration of the city, a celebration of Morocco and it reflects a bit Morocco's good life to the world," said program director Mahmoud Lemseffer. "It is a vehicle to present the image of our country, of its hospitality and tolerance."

Tens of thousands attend each of the festival's eight venues which present Arabic music, Moroccan music, music from sub-Saharan Africa as well as international acts, which this year included Evanescence, the Scorpions, Gloria Gaynor, Nigel Kennedy and Jimmy Cliff.

Most of the acts have free sections open to the public and on Tuesday, families strolling along Rabat's Bouregreg river stopped to listen to Beninian songstress Angelique Kidjo belt out classics from South African diva Mariam Makebe and talk about the struggle against apartheid.

But for critics, there is irony in punishing artists at home while hosting international ones known for their support of freedom of expression. Lenny Kravitz, for instance, has striven in song after song to confront America's tortured attitude about race.

"I think that people should really say what they feel ? everybody has the right to speak their mind, you see how things change in places where people were once condemned," said Kravitz at a press conference Thursday when asked about politics in music. "When I was in Brazil a couple of years ago, I was talking with (musician and activist) Caetano Veloso who dealt with that same thing, who did jail time ? and now he has made a difference."

Salif Traore of the Ivorian band Magic System said that for African artists, speaking truth to power and freedom of expression is what their music is all about.

"We in Africa, we say that artists, musicians and singers are the eyes, ears, and mouths of the people," he told The Associated Press, when asked about his views on the El-Haqed case.

Rachid el-Belghiti, who heads a national anti-Mawazine campaign, also contests the government's assertion that it's supporting culture in Morocco with this festival, countering that it's really just about making the country look good abroad.

He said the Mawazine, which is run by a close confidant of King Mohammed VI, eats up the lion's share of corporate sponsorship so that little is left for other festivals around the country.

As millions are being spent to lure in big name acts, local theaters and dance schools around the country are closing down because of a lack of funding.

"A country which puts its artists in prison simply for expressing themselves with their voice or their instruments cannot pretend to support culture," he said. "That's impossible."

Director David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" received mixed reviews after its debut at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 25). Critics were split on whether they felt Robert Pattinson was right for the lead role. Some felt his performance was bland, but others thought he nailed the part, fitting well into the director's vision.

During a press conference for the film, Pattinson explained why he and Cronenberg work well together, chalking it up to Cronenberg's careful direction.

"If [a director's] sitting on the set, a bunch of people will ask you questions all the time," he said. "And then a lot of directors, I find, are kind of exhausted by the time they're actually supposed to do their job with the actors. They're not really listening anymore. I think David is listening so intently when you're doing a scene. ... When you feel something in a scene, you know that he's seen it, which is such a relief. And it makes you actually pay attention to what you're doing as well."

Cronenberg also made Pattinson aware of different camera angles and how the placement of cameras can greatly affect his performance.

"I think a lot of directors and actors refuse to accept anything about camera technique," Pattinson continued. "[Cronenberg was] completely frank about it and [said], 'Listen, if I put a camera here, it's going to totally affect the way you perform.' And it really did, the blocking was like direction, which I never really experienced before."

"Cosmopolis" follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in a futuristic New York City. As he's chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut, the world is falling apart around him — protestors are rioting, his marriage is failing, his vast financial status is declining and he soon discovers clues that reveal an attempt on his life.

When asked how he prepared for the taxing role, Pattinson told the audience he spent a lot of the time concerned over how his performance would come together. "I kind of spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying and confusing myself. And I remember the weekend before shooting, I called David — because we had no rehearsals — to talk to him about it. [I said,] 'I just wanted to sort of ask one question,' " he recalled, mimicking his timid tone. "He said, 'Do you want to talk about the movie for a second?' So I went to his house and I think he just said that it doesn't really matter: 'Let's just start and something will happen.' "

Worrying aside, Pattinson found a way to bring his character to life. He didn't improvise scenes and he didn't change any of the lines. He stuck to the script and followed Cronenberg's vision for his character as it was laid out in front of him.

"I think [Eric Packer's] impossible to approach like you would a normal character," he said. "What I liked about the script initially was its lyricism and just the rhythms of it. Normally when you do a movie, you can kind of blur the lines and make it your own. But with this, I didn't want to change a single word, even the punctuation. That made it easier, it's like you're doing a song instead of a movie. It freed you up. If you're trying to do something in a cerebral way, it becomes about ego and it's silly at that point."

Did Pattinson find similarities between himself and his character?

"I do think people are trying to kill me all the time," he joked.

Devils Beat Rangers In Game 5, 5-3: New Jersey Takes 3-2 Series Lead (VIDEO)

NEW YORK ? Ryan Carter snapped a tie with 4:24 left, and the New Jersey Devils survived for a 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers after blowing a three-goal lead in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday night.

The Devils, who led 3-0 before the first period was half over, have a 3-2 edge in the series and can advance to face the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup finals with a win at home on Friday night. If the Rangers can stay alive then, Game 7 would be back in Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

The Devils seemed primed for an easy win when Stephen Gionta and Patrik Elias scored within the first 4:13 of the game. Travis Zajac made it 3-0 before the Rangers woke up and began chipping away.

Brandon Prust brought New York within 3-1 before the first period was over, and Ryan Callahan made it a one-goal game in the first minute of the second. The Garden really rocked when Marian Gaborik tied it at 3 just 17 seconds into the third with his first goal of the series.

But the comeback was all for naught. Carter put the Devils back in front, and Zach Parise sealed it with an empty-net goal in the closing seconds.

"I thought we probably played our best game of the series tonight," Rangers coach John Tortorella said.

Once Gaborik tied it with an unassisted goal that ricocheted in off the skate of goalie Martin Brodeur, it appeared the Rangers would ride the comeback all the way to one of the most stirring wins in team history ? one that would rival victories over New Jersey in the classic 1994 East finals.

Carter made sure it wouldn't happen.

Ilya Kovalchuk knocked Michael Del Zotto off the puck in the right corner, and Gionta sent a pass in front to Carter ? who had just charged in front from the bench ? for a quick shot that beat Henrik Lundqvist.

"You have to (keep it together) this time of year," Gionta said. "You have to have a short memory. Fortunately we did and came out with the victory."

New Jersey was outshot 28-17 overall and had only six shots in the third period, but two of them went in. Now the Devils are on the verge of their first Cup finals appearance since they won their third title in 2003.

Brodeur who has been the backbone of every Devils championship kept his focus throughout the third period when he was loudly taunted with chants of "Mar-ty, Mar-ty" after New York got even.

The Rangers were ultimately done in by another terrible start. For the 13th straight game in these playoffs, the team that scored first in New York's contests has gone on to win. The Rangers had been on a pattern of win-one, lose-one, but now they are on the verge of elimination with their second two-game losing streak in a series this year.

The only time the Rangers have won two straight in a playoff series is when they overcame a 3-2 hole in the first round and knocked out Ottawa.

The Rangers burned their timeout in the first period, and Devils coach Peter DeBoer spent his with 10:17 left in the game after his club was forced to ice the puck. Parise implored his teammates on the bench to, `Come on boys.' and the messages from the coach and the captain did the trick.

New Jersey surely never thought it would be in this kind of fight after storming in front early.

Not only didn't the Rangers have the strong start they craved and insisted they needed, they were practically run out of their building less than 10 minutes in.

The same problems that plagued New York in its 4-1 loss in Game 4, when the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, cropped up again in front of the home fans that grew frustrated and angry early.

Gionta got the Devils going 2:43 in when he gathered a rebound of Mark Fayne's shot right in front of Lundqvist, steadied himself without any pressure from the defense, and slipped in his third goal of the playoffs to start the barrage.

Elias made it 2-0 just 1:30 later on New Jersey's fourth shot of the night.

After Kovalchuk fumbled the puck just inside the blue line, he dived to keep it from leaving the Rangers' zone. The puck eventually came to Adam Henrique at the right point for a shot that was stopped by Lundqvist. Elias got it in front and scored his fourth.

Tortorella used his timeout then, but it made little difference. He appeared to be calm as he moved back and forth behind the bench while talking to his players. Whatever the message was didn't sink in.

New York generated a couple of scoring chances soon after that were either turned aside by Brodeur or thwarted by the Rangers themselves. Gaborik was set up in front after teammate Ruslan Fedotenko got the puck to him after a wraparound the Devils net, but the Rangers' struggling leading scorer fired a shot over the net from close range.

Fedotenko was in the middle of another chance moments later when he sent a shot in on Brodeur. The rebound came out to Derek Stepan, whose drive from in close was smothered by Brodeur.

The Devils shrugged those off and went back to padding their lead.

Just 5:26 after Elias' goal, Zajac made it 3-0 with his seventh of the playoffs. Bryce Salvador wiped out Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh in the offensive zone and started the play going the other way. Zajac got a clean shot from just inside the right circle that sailed past Lundqvist and beat him inside the left post at 9:49.

The tide began to turn the Rangers' way the rest of the period as they allowed only one shot the rest of the period and began cutting into the seemingly insurmountable deficit.

Prust, making his return following a one-game suspension for an elbow he delivered to the head of Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov in Game 3, showed off a bit of scoring touch when he converted on a breakaway with 4:19 left in the first.

Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky turned over the puck in the neutral zone to Fedotenko, who fed a pass to the streaking Prust in the New Jersey end. Prust surged past the hardcharging Zidlicky and slid a backhander past Brodeur for his first goal of the playoffs.

The Rangers managed to outshoot the Devils 9-6 in the lopsided first period, but continued their sudden defensive dominance well into the second.

But not before they cut the Devils' lead down to a goal just 32 seconds into the second.

Brandon Dubinsky, back from a foot injury, fired a shot from the left point that was deflected in front and caromed toward the left corner. Artem Anisimov flung the puck back toward the crease and it struck the left skate of the driving Callahan and got past Brodeur. The goal stood up after a brief video review.

New Jersey didn't record its first shot of the period, and its second since its third goal, until Henrique put a puck in on Lundqvist 6:23 into the frame.

Lundqvist made just 12 saves en route to the loss and the Rangers allowed five goals for the first time all postseason.

To make the finals now, New York will have to win a third consecutive seven-game series. The Rangers have already played 19 postseason games.

Notes: Dubinsky had been sidelined since he was injured in the Rangers' victory over Ottawa in Game 7 of the first round. He sat out all seven games of the second round against Washington and the first four against New Jersey. John Mitchell was scratched to make room in the lineup. Prust's return forced D Steve Eminger to sit out after he played the two previous games. ... Kovalchuk now has 10 assists in the postseason.
