MOCKSVILLE, N.C. ? New research is showing tanning beds are linked to more common forms of skin cancer.
The study published in the British Medical Journal this week, said indoor tanning may be to blame for an estimated 170,000 cases nationally, of non-melanoma skin cancer every year. Dermatologists said the numbers are alarming and young people are most at risk, but tanners say the statistics aren't enough to stop them.
Mocksville resident Karen Cope said she has been tanning indoors for 20 years.
"It's like, you're going to a spa, you're getting you're manicure and pedicure. It's very relaxing," said Cope.
?"That kind of intense ultra-violet light exposure does increase the risk and development of all types of skin cancer," said dermatologist at Rowan Regional Medical Center Dr. Jennifer Tromberg.
In the study published Tuesday, researchers found that indoor tanning is linked to an estimated 170,000 cases of two other forms of skin cancer other than melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer. Experts say those who start tanning young are most at risk.
?"If this is what's happening to them now and they let it go and these cancers grow and grow and, it could cause them a lot of problems at a young age and that's very scary," said Tromberg.
The study shows basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are common, affecting about 2 million Americans just this year. And Tromberg said that's all the more reason for stricter regulations.
In North Carolina, those under the age of 18 require a parents consent and those under the age of 14 require a doctor's prescription.
?"Even putting on regular sunscreen and going out into the sun, you're not 100% protected, just like you're not here, so it's just a risk you take," said Cope.
Cope said she does think about the risks of cancer, but nothing would stop her from tanning. Doctors said the more common forms of skin cancer are preventable. They encourage the use of spray tans and sunscreen and also regular skin screenings.
