Sunday celebration to honor the Rev. J.R. Manley of First Baptist Church

The Annual Freedom Day Observance & Celebration, sponsored by the Chapel Hill/-Carrboro and Vicinity Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, will be held at 4 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 1 at First Baptist Church, 106 N. Roberson St. in Chapel Hill/.?

"A special part of the Freedom Celebration will be honoring the past, present, and future of African Americans and all Americans, and paying tribute to a civil rights and spiritual legend, the Rev. Dr. John R. Manley, pastor of First Baptist Church for 65 years," organizers said in a news release.

The Rev. Willie S. Darby, an attorney and president of the Granville County NAACP in Oxford, will be the guest speaker and areas choirs will provide celebratory music.
