The Los Angeles Amble: Day 5 Part I ? Mike Mignola, Mar?a Rend?n

Mike Mignola, taken by Seth Rutledge

Meeting Mike Mignola was something we were all looking forward to. He talked to us about the experience of having his work travel through so many mediums while keeping it true to his own initial vision. Mike told us all he has ever wanted to draw are monsters, and that his designs tend to be inspired by different mythologies. Before working with Dark Horse to publish Hellboy, he worked as an inker and comic artist at Marvel Comics.

He also showed us some of his production design work for Disney?s Atlantis: The Lost Empire. While the film was strongly influenced by his style, the visual development process and Mike?s personal process were very different.

Mike Mignola signed my sketchbook!

Mike brought some of his artbooks with him to sell, and they were all gone in less than five minutes. They were all signed by him and completely amazing. We also got to see his sketchbook, and the quality of his sketches was great. His style comes across so strongly in each of his studies and gestures. Really impressive!

Later that day, Mexican illustrator Mar?a Rend?n visited us. She got her BFA in illustration in Mexico, and continued her studies in illustration at the Art Center College in Pasadena. She currently works as a freelance illustrator and her work is part of exhibits in various galleries. ?She showed us how her work has evolved through the years, and how she?s found an interesting creative outlet in found and custom made objects for illustration.
