PENINSULA, Ohio ? The annual Polar Express ride to support families and children facing difficult times departed for the ?North Pole? Wednesday.
The program is based on The Polar Express, an award-winning book and movie based on a young boy?s trip to the North Pole. Trains on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad picked up families from its Rockside Station in Independence and Northside Station in Akron for the scenic trip to the ?North Pole?.
Local organizations were given tickets to the ride to distribute to families in need, facing medical problems and other issues. Some of the organizations who took part include: the Cleveland Cavs Foundation, National MS Society, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Akron Children?s Hospital.
The program also collects winter clothing and items to be given to local charities, and has been a northeast Ohio tradition for more than 17 years.
