A new blueprint for the nation?s food production calls for 80 per cent of all Australian food to be sourced and processed within 150 kilometres of consumption.
The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance represents some organic farmers, market networks, consumer and health groups.
It has released its draft People?s Food Plan emphasising the importance of local production and consumption.
Canberra farmer and alliance president Michael Croft says the plan has been prompted by rising fuel prices and growing awareness of the carbon emissions from agriculture.
?Rather than getting food from South America or China, it will be sourced locally and processed locally,? he said.
The federal Labor government is considering feedback to develop a national food plan white paper.
Mr Croft says the alliance has made submissions.
?It is chalk and cheese and somewhere in the middle of those two plans lies the answers,? he said.
Mr Croft says the final plan will be launched next year to coincide with the release of the government?s plan.
?It is not so much an adversarial position.
?What we are trying to do is keep the government on track and actually say well look there is an alternate way of looking at this and we think it is the correct way particularly if you take the long-term into account,? he said.
?So essentially we are going to keep them honest.
?Otherwise it is going to get big or get out. It will be export focussed and they will let the market decide,? Mr Croft added.
