Japan coach Zaccheroni given contract extension

TOKYO (AP) ? The Japan Football Association has extended the contract of national team coach Alberto Zaccheroni through the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

Zaccheroni's deal, however, could be shortened if Japan fails to qualify for the World Cup, the JFA said. The Asian qualifying tournament wraps up in June 2013.

Japan has seven points in Group B after beating Oman 3-0, Jordan 6-0 and tying Australia 1-1 this month in the final round of World Cup qualifiers.

The JFA also announced that Kuniya Daini has been appointed president, taking over from Junji Ogura who retired.
