Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ? On Monday, August 6, Hofstra University Museum Executive Director Beth Levinthal had the opportunity to thank a representative from Astoria Federal Savings for the bank?s support of the exhibition Opportunity and Impact: Works by ?migr? Artists, on view through September 9, 2012 at the David Filderman Gallery, ninth floor, Axinn Library, South Campus. The exhibit includes 24 paintings, photographs, prints and sculpture created by immigrant artists from Europe, Cuba and South America. Featured artists, such as Josef Albers, Jon Corbino, Andreas Feininger, Aaron Henry Gorson, George Grosz. Louis Lozowick, Gilles Peress, Ben Shahn and Rufino Tamayo, came to America seeking freedom from political oppression, to escape violence and social upheaval, or to find greater opportunity. The works on display date from the early 20th century to the early 21st century.
Sharon Phillips, branch manager for Astoria Federal Savings? local branch in East Meadow, came to campus to view the exhibition and meet with Ms. Levinthal and Kristy Caratzola, curator of the exhibition and collections manager for the Hofstra University Museum.
