New intervention model focuses on domestic violence perpetrators ...

Domestic violence is a big issue, and one which everybody can agree needs to be addressed. On this blog, we often speak about issues related to domestic violence charges, and put a particular focus on defense strategy. It is also interesting, though, to take a look at domestic violence treatment. After all, domestic violence is not merely a legal phenomenon, but something that occurs as part of the dynamic of real relationships.

In thinking about how to address the problem of domestic violence, one question to ponder is whether stricter laws and more aggressive prosecution of domestic violence is the best way to approach the problem. Might there be other avenues for helping address the problem which give offenders a better chance of rehabilitating and staying out of the criminal justice system.

Indeed, domestic violence offenders already are often required to undergo certain types of education or counseling. It isn't clear how effective many of these programs are, though.

Much of the data and intervention in domestic violence cases is focused on the victim and what they can do to avoid situations of domestic violence. In fact, $4 billion is spent each year on treatment of domestic violence victims.

Interestingly, a new intervention program which focuses on the perpetrator of domestic abuse rather than the victim has shown promising results. The crux of the study is that equipping batterers with better communication skills enables them to deal with conflicts in their relationship without any violence. The idea is that reducing psychological abuse may reduce intimate partner violence, which is often an escalation of more pervasive forms of abuse, such as verbal and mental.

Time will tell whether this new model of intervention makes its way into widespread use in dealing with domestic violence, or whether victims and offenders going through the court system will benefit from it.
